A College History Class About Video Games? Sign Me Up.

History buffs who enjoy video games may want to enroll at the University of South Carolina and sign up for the “Computer Games and History” course scheduled for the spring 2013 semester.

Associate Professor Joseph November is running a class in which students play, and discuss, games like Company of Heroes, the Total War series, Civilization and Age of Empires. The undergraduate course “examines the ways history is presented in computer games” by “pairing selected games and pieces of written historical scholarship.” Students will be evaluating the respective games’ versions of history in class discussion for 75 minutes twice a week, as well as in written assignments

Students may have less difficulty coming up with 18 to 20 pages about games such as Assassin’s Creed 2 and Fallout 3 than about something like Tinker v. Des Moines. Either way, this continues the trend of bringing video games into classrooms as modern teaching tools.
